Bingo Game Origins
There are many theories as to how, when and where the game of bingo has its origins. The general consensus is that it all started in Italy as far back as the 1530’s with a game Italians called “Lo Guioco del lotto Italia” (a game still played today). However, there are some who believe it’s origins go back even further to the Roman times with a game involving numbered stones, although there is no proof of this!
The French also had a game similar to bingo, called “le lotto”. This is the closest resemblance to the game as we know it now.
As for the word “bingo”, this is thought to come from the game “beano”, played throughout the America’s during the 1920’s. It is believed that during one of these games, one player got so excited that he called ‘bingo” instead of “beano” - and the name stuck from there on in. Another theory on how the name came about is that players used bells which they would ring upon completion of their tickets; this sounded like ‘bingo’, and when the bells were no longer in use, the word was called instead.
However it came into being- the word bingo is now recognised the world over!
